WHAT IS AN ARCHITECT?
Architects are designers who create spaces for living that respond to their users and environment in sensitive, artistic, and soulful ways. We combine form, function, proportion, and materiality into three-dimensional spaces that protect, nurture, and inspire.

PRE-DESIGN
Design starts with listening, asking questions, information-gathering and careful analysis. What are your goals and objectives with this project? What are you inspired by? What is possible to build given the site, the code, your budget and time constraints? The resulting answers form the basis for beginning our design journey together.

SCHEMATIC DESIGN
This is where we start giving form to the ideas we’ve outlined together. Using a combination of hand drawing, 3D modeling and virtual reality, we will start to visually explore how the spaces will look, feel and function. The goal of this phase of work is to do enough design to obtain preliminary pricing from a builder.

DESIGN DEVELOPMENT
From there, I develop the design direction further into more-detailed drawings that describe how the project will meet codes, how it will look and how it will be built. I then submit these drawings to your city or county for review and approval of any necessary building permits while your builder provides updated pricing.

CONSTRUCTION DRAWINGS
While we wait for your building permit to be approved and issued, I will prepare all the rest of the drawings necessary for the project. Things like interior elevations, material and fixture selections, lighting plans and construction details are not necessary for permit review but are required to provide a completely-considered design that a builder requires to successfully construct your project.

CONSTRUCTION
With your building permit approved and all drawings complete, now your builder can begin construction. Though my involvement begins to taper off here, it’s still very important that I’m active during construction in order to help assure that what is built is true to the drawings, that any builder questions are answered in a timely manner and that any additional requested information is provided.
